Several years ago I had a very close friend ask me, “How do you know that you are going to follow Jesus and love Him until this life is over?” Valid question. A question that really made me examine my state of heart, my love for Jesus and my walk with Him. I took a couple minutes to think about it and I began to remember a passage from John that I had recently read:
John 6:66-68 “At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him. Then Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked, “Are you also going to leave?” Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom or where would we go? You have the words that give eternal life. We believe, and we know you are the Holy One of God.j””
In this passage Jesus had just shared a hard but truthful message and it caused some of his followers to walk away from Him. Jesus asks His twelve closest followers, “Are you outta here too?” Peter’s response to this question is probably the verse in the bible that I can identify with the most. He says, (my own paraphrase), “WHERE ELSE WOULD I GO!!?? You are the giver of life and love and you have rescued me from my sinful self and this fallen world! You have given me a hope and a purpose, how could I ever turn away from you?!” How beautiful!
I can identify with this scripture so clearly because while following the Lord is wonderful, it is challenging me, growing me, and stretching me everyday. However, it always comes back to this scripture for me, “To where else would I go, you have the words that give eternal life and I know that you are God.” He is faithful and good and I will follow Him until the end.
